Local girl hockey players to compete for national title

Four girl hockey players from Cambria and Somerset Counties are competing next week with hopes of a national title. Three of the girls are in the 19U division. They are making the trip to Irvine, California to represent the Armstrong Arrows in the Girls Hockey National Tournament. Man stabs 3 people with scissors on cruise ship, prosecutor says

JUNEAU, Alaska (TND) — A cruise ship worker was arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) after he attacked three people with a pair of medical scissors aboard the vessel, according to a prosecutor. The U.S. attorney's office on Tuesday identified the man as 35-year-old Ntando Sogoni, 35, of South Africa. A news release noted he was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon within maritime and territorial jurisdiction. According to an affidavit from FBI Special Agent Matthew Judy, Sogoni was recently hired by a cruise line and joined the ship, the Norwegian Encore, in Seattle on Sunday.

PennDOT announces reopening of more driver license centers

PennDOT announced Monday that more driver license centers in the western half of the state will be reopening for driver licensing and photo services. The announcement is in response to the most recent guidance from the Department of Health and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. ALTOONA, Pa. (WJAC) — A criminal complaint is providing more details about what led to a shooting Wednesday at the Central Court building in Altoona that claimed the life of a corrections officer. Authorities were called to the court facility, located at 615 4th Street, just after 3 p.m. for reports of shots fired and an officer down. Crews responded to find that 47-year-old Rhonda Russell had been shot in the holding area.

College GameDay returning to Happy Valley for the Whiteout

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa (WJAC) — After weeks of speculation, ESPN's College GameDay confirmed in a Twitter post late Saturday night that they will be in University Park next week for Penn State's Whiteout game against Michigan. Penn State football's Twitter also confirmed GameDay's return. The Nittany Lions scored a hard fought road victory versus Iowa last night, improving their record to 6-0, while Michigan routed Illinois to improve to 5-1 on the season.

Fight at Harrisburg fireworks show throws crowd into chaos

HARRISBURG, Pa. — UPDATE | Harrisburg City officials addressed the chaos from the Fourth of July Celebration at Riverfront Park Tuesday. Harrisburg Police Commissioner Thomas Carter said a fight broke out around 9:30 Monday night on Walnut Street. He said thousands of community members were waiting for the fireworks show to begin, after a delay due to the Senators baseball game. Carter said the fight was between two juveniles, one of which was arrested.

Georgia corrections officer fatally attacked by inmate using homemade weapon: Officials

TATTNALL COUNTY, Ga. (WGXA) — A Georgia corrections officer is dead after an inmate attacked him. According to the Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC), Correctional Officer Robert Clark was escorting two inmates at Smith State Prison in Glennville when one of the inmates, later identified as Layton Lester, assaulted him from behind with a homemade weapon. The other inmate was also assaulted after trying to help Officer Clark. GDC officials said Clark, 42, started his career in April of this year.

Johnstown police department struggling with police shortage

The Johnstown Police Department is looking to fill eight officer positions but have only received six applicants with just over a week before applications are closing. Johnstown Chief of Police Richard Pritchard said, “Nationally the interest in police work is down based on the current events and the defund the police things that are going on.” But Pritchard said he does not think that is the problem for Johnstown. “Here in our community, we have great support for our police department,” Pritchard said.
