North Star students return to class; law enforcement investigating 'mysterious' incident

UPDATE |SOMERSET COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — Monday marked the first day back on campus for many students and staff at North Star high school following Thursday morning’s “mysterious” situation where 41 students went to the hospital and were treated for symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning. Superintendent Louis Lepley says attendance was at a normal rate. Officials say the school is considered safe following an investigation by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Country Music star Morgan Wallen to make several tour stops in PA, including PNC Park

Pittsburgh (WJAC) — Country music star Morgan Wallen will be making several stops in Pennsylvania next year as part of his "One Night at a Time" World Tour. Wallen's first stop in the Commonwealth will be on May 18th in Hershey. Then in June, Wallen is scheduled to play twice in a span of three days, beginning with a concert at PNC Park in Pittsburgh. His final performance in the Keystone State will be in Philadelphia on June 17th.

Gov. Wolf fulfills commitment to raise minimum wage for PA workers

PA - (WOLF) — Today, Governor Tom Wolf announced that the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will fulfill its commitment to raise the minimum wage for commonwealth employees to $15 per hour by January 31, 2022. An increase to $12 would directly benefit 765,000 Pennsylvania workers, or more than 13 percent of the employed population. An increase to $15 would directly benefit nearly 1.5 million workers, or 25 percent of Pennsylvania workers.

Hollidaysburg man accused of stealing over $300K from Altoona law firm

Blair Co., PA (WJAC) — Authorities with the Altoona Police Department say a Hollidaysburg man is facing embezzlement charges after being accused of stealing hundreds-of-thousands of dollars from a Blair County law firm. Police say 41-year-old Adam Bush allegedly embezzled $380,000 from the accounts of Goldstein & Heslop Law Firm, over the course of a 3-year period, where he was employed as a bookkeeper. Authorities say Bush faces several felonies including forgery, access device fraud, identity theft, theft, receiving stolen property and criminal use of a communication device.

Johnstown Christmas tree assembled in Central Park

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WJAC) — It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Johnstown's Central Park. With snow falling down, crews arrived around 8 a.m. Tuesday to begin building the frame of the Christmas tree. The final product is 36 feet tall and will be topped with a 4-foot star. The tree draws thousands of people throughout the holiday season. Organizers say it's a way to boost holiday spirit in the city and maybe even start new traditions.

Retired teachers, college students now allowed to substitute teach in Pennsylvania

HARRISBURG, Pa. — After months of a substitute teacher crisis brewing across the Commonwealth, Governor Wolf has signed bipartisan legislation aimed at easing the shortfall. On Dec. 20, Act 91 went into effect expanding the pool of eligible substitutes to fill these temporary openings during the remainder of this school year and 2022-23. Representative Barb Gleim (R), who sponsored the bill, said in the past the state-issued 14,000 teaching certificates annually, now it's down to fewer than 5,000.

Whitewater park at Greenhouse closed while engineers work 'to reduce risk'

CONEMAUGH TOWNSHIP, Pa. — The water rapids area of Greenhouse Park in Somerset County is closed until at least next Tuesday as engineers decide how to make a section of the man-made whitewater feature safer. The artificial whitewater rapids in the Stonycreek River were a part of the non-natural whitewater park in Pennsylvania that was designed for boaters and tubers coming down the river. Phase two of the project alone cost $400,000 to construct.

Altoona man accused of raping, assaulting & violating woman during argument

Altoona, PA (WJAC) — Authorities with the Altoona Police Department say a Blair County man is behind bars after he was accused of physically and sexually assaulting a woman over the weekend. According to the affidavit, police say the woman told officers that she and 20-year-old Aaron Foster had allegedly attended a party on Saturday night and that Foster reportedly became "upset" with her because she had "touched another man's arm.

Brookville man admits to assaulting girl inside Elk County home in 2019

Elk County, PA (WJAC) — State police say a Brookville man is facing charges following an investigation into allegations that he sexually assaulted a female juvenile in 2019. Police say in November, the victim, who is now a teenager, reported that she had been inappropriately touched by 22-year-old Ethan Fike, when she was 12 years old, at a residence in Ridgway.
