Forest Hills School District reveals new mascot

The St. Michael Labor Day Festival wasn’t the only attraction that brought people to St. Michael on Saturday. The Forest Hills School District unveiled their new mascot, a Ranger, for the first time during a parade down Locust Street. New Virtual Learning Center opens in Johnstown, providing 60 computers for online learning

Johnstown, Pa. (WJAC) — This year has been challenging for many students as they navigate online learning due to COVID-19. That's especially true for those who don't have computers, WiFi, and the other resources they need to learn. One organization in Cambria County is giving local students what they need to stay ahead this school year. Sisters Sha'Kia and Shale are students at Greater Johnstown, and COVID-19 has taken a toll on how they learn.

PA Department of Corrections recommends closure of SCI Retreat

In a 643-page report released Wednesday, the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections has recommended the closure of SCI Retreat. It lists reasons for the closure as the age of the physical facility, infrastructure concerns (especially with the bridge entryway), and the inability to house physically handicapped prisoners, among other reasons. Beer, Wine, and Spirits Festival coming to Lorain / Stonycreek Hiking Trails next month

CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. (WJAC) — Organizers with the Lorain / Stonycreek Hiking Trails are gearing up for their "Beer, Wine, and Spirits Festival" coming up next month. It will take place Saturday, June 3rd at 1:00 PM at the trails along Green Valley Street in Johnstown. In addition to food vendors, attendees can sample and buy beer, wine, and spirits from vendors from across the region. Local musicians will perform including tunes from The Clarks.

California firefighters make progress against wildfire east of San Francisco Bay

MELINA WALLING and JOHN ANTCZAK Associated Press — California's largest wildfire so far this year was significantly surrounded Monday after blackening a swath of hilly grasslands between San Francisco Bay and the Central Valley. The Corral Fire was 75% contained after scorching more than 22 square miles (57 square kilometers) during the weekend, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said. One home was destroyed and two firefighters were injured.

Longtime Johnstown pizza shop under new ownership

Johnstown, PA (WJAC) — A community staple in Johnstown’s West End is now under new ownership. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Wednesday at Zeke’s Pizza on Fairfield Avenue. Mark and Tabitha McIntire say they're looking forward to continuing the restaurant's legacy. Zeke's Pizza opened in 1989 and has been serving the community for 34 years. The new owners say Zeke’s will be open every day of the week, but their hours do vary.

Berlin man accused of raping unconscious woman

Somerset Co., PA (WJAC) — State police in Somerset County have charged a Berlin man after he was accused of raping an unconscious woman at his home. Troopers say Christopher Crites, 49, faces charges of rape of an unconscious victim, sexual assault and aggravated indecent assault, according to online court documents. Investigators say on August 21 of last year, troopers received a report of a sexual assault in which the victim claimed that she had been raped by Crites.

Greater Johnstown Career and Technology Center recognizes graduates

Greater Johnstown Career and Technology Center recognized their students Thursday morning as they graduated from the school. 200 students in at least eight school districts took part in the ceremony, which took place at People's Natural Gas Park in downtown Johnstown. Their administrative director, John Augustine, said the administration is proud of its students, as they spent the last three years of their high school career learning a trade as they prepare to enter the workforce or the military.
