Historic Highland Hall opens as new senior living space

HOLLIDAYSBURG, Pa. (WJAC) -- Highland Hall towered empty over the historic district for about 12 years before reopening as a senior living facility Thursday. Since about 1840, the building has served as a private girls' school, a Franciscan school, a military radio school during World War II and county offices. At Thursday's ribbon-cutting, Blair County Commissioner Bruce Erb called Walnut Street one of the most beautiful streets in Hollidaysburg. The street is packed with historic houses and trees, but some called Highland Hall an eyesore until recently.

Josh Gallagher to open for country artist Lee Ann Womack at IUP concert

INDIANA – Cresson native Josh Gallagher will serve as the opening act for country artist Lee Ann Womack’s performance at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania's Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex on April 20 at 8 p.m., it was announced Thursday. Gallagher, who finished in fourth place on the “The Voice” last year, has been devoting his time to the studio and has currently released three songs on iTunes, “Pick Any Small Town,” “We Always Had” and “Ain’t No Angels.

Steelers, Kennywood team up to launch Steeler-themed roller coaster, amenities

WEST MIFFLIN, Pa. -- The Steelers and Kennywood amusement park are joining forces. Officials announced Thursday the two are coming together to create Steelers Country at the park, which includes exclusive merchandise, skill games, food locations, a themed tailgating experience and the anchor of Steeler Country, the Steel Curtain roller coaster. The roller coaster hosts nine inversions, a 197-foot-tall loop with a maximum height of 220 feet and speeds as fast as 75 mph.

University of Florida president slams campus protests as 'stupid and reductionistic'

GAINSVILLE, Fla. (TND) — University of Florida (UF) President Ben Sasse offered harsh words for pro-Palestine protesters on college campuses this week. Police officers in April apprehended nine demonstrators at UF and three at the University of South Florida during protests demanding the colleges divest from entities perceived as profiting off Israel’s war against Hamas terrorists. UF purportedly told its protesters they risked legal consequences with their demonstration at the Plaza of The Americas.

Hummingbirds make return to Pennsylvania

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WJAC) — For the first time this year, hummingbirds have been spotted in Pennsylvania. According to Hummingbirdcentral.com, the first Pennsylvania sighting was in Cambria County Monday. A sighting notification from Cresson reads: “Surprised to see our first 2 Ruby-throated hummingbirds looking for our feeders, which weren’t out yet. Now they are!” Most hummingbirds spend the winter in Central America or Mexico where it’s much warmer the site says.

Hundreds of school officials meet to discuss PIAA playoff system, rules

STATE COLLEGE – School leaders from across Pennsylvania gathered in State College Tuesday to discuss the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association playoff system and whether the current rules are fair for all schools. The organization is a nonprofit and voluntary membership corporation. The organization was created to develop and enforce rules regulating interscholastic athletic competitions. Hundreds of school officials showed up to make sure their voices are heard. Some of them even suggested leaving the PIAA if nothing's done.

Man breaks into Somerset County home, claims he is God

SOMERSET COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — State police in Somerset County say a man is behind bars after he reportedly broke into a home earlier this week and told the homeowners that he was God. According to the affidavit, troopers were dispatched early Monday morning for a reported burglary at a residence in Black Township. Police say the caller reported that is she was passing by the home and noticed that all of the lights were on inside.
