Organizers release schedule for 2023 Central PA Festival of the Arts

Centre Co., PA (WJAC) — Organizers have released the schedule of events for the 57th annual Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts in State College. Officials say the festival attracts approximately 125,000 visitors each summer and features various artists and displays, as well as live music and other performances. 1 person dead after 'major structure fire' at Bedford County Post Office building

WOODBURY, Pa. (WJAC) — One person is dead after a massive fire Sunday night at a post office in Bedford County, according to county coroner Rusty Styer. Residents in the area tell 6 News that the post office in Woodbury Borough along the 100 block of Main Street also had apartment buildings. Styer says they found the deceased was found on the first floor of the building and an autopsy is scheduled for Monday July 5th.

12 injured in apartment floor collapse near IUP

INDIANA, Pa. (AP) — A dozen people were injured in the collapse of a second-story floor inside an apartment complex near a western Pennsylvania over the weekend, authorities said. Seven people were taken to hospitals and five others were treated at the scene after the 11:50 p.m. Saturday collapse at Elm by Traverse Commons about a mile (1.6 kilometers) from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, state police told the Tribune-Review. Trooper Cliff Greenfield said the victims had injuries ranging from serious to minor.

Bedford Co. man admits to viewing child porn, tells police that 'he needs help,' PSP says

Bedford County, PA (WJAC) — State police in Bedford County say a Hopewell man is facing charges after he allegedly admitted to repeatedly viewing child pornography. According to the affidavit, troopers say 24-year-old Donald Steele reportedly came to the barracks, last October, to report that he has viewed the pornographic images and that "he needs help." Authorities say Steele told investigators that he views the images and videos, on various websites, and admitted to downloading some of them on an old iPod.

Food insecurity soars in local counties, hitting record levels, report finds

Feeding America’s latest Map the Meal Gap report shows local data for food insecurity. This year’s report says that insecurity levels in Cambria and Somerset counties are worse than ever. Officials from the Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank are saying food insecurity rates went up during the pandemic and never came back down. Now, they say one in eight people in the eleven counties they serve suffer from food insecurity. In African American communities, that number increases to one out of every three people.

Johnstown Catholic schools announce rebranding

Johnstown, PA (WJAC) — Johnstown area catholic schools say they are "rebranding." Officials with the Bishop McCort Catholic School announced Wednesday that the district will rename Divine Mercy Catholic Academy's east and west campuses as Bishop McCort Catholic Elementary East and Bishop McCort Catholic Elementary West. Bishop McCort Catholic High School will remain under the same name. School officials say they think this decision will strengthen their schools and bring stability to the school systems.

Nissan to fix suspensions on about 200K Altima midsize cars

DETROIT (AP) — Nissan will do a "service campaign" to fix nearly 200,000 Altima midsize cars because a suspension part can come loose from the frame due to corrosion. The campaign falls short of a recall, but the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is continuing an investigation into the problem that covers more than 2 million cars. The campaign includes 2013 Altimas in 22 U.S. states and Washington, D.C., that use salt to clear roads in the winter.

Devastating tornadoes wreak havoc in Ohio, leaving 3 dead and community in ruins

Johnstown Salvation Army closing thrift store, still offering other services

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WJAC) — The Johnstown Salvation Army Family Thrift Store on Eisenhower Boulevard is closing after more than 20 years of serving the community, officials announced Friday. Officials say the store will be closing March 1, but they stress that help for financial hardship and other life issues will continue to be available through The Salvation Army Johnstown Worship and Service Center. The main purpose of the store was raising money to offer rehabilitation programs to people in need for free, but officials say current circumstances, like building maintenance costs and the COVID-19 pandemic, have made supporting the programs through the store impossible.
