Israeli military probe cites secondary explosion in deadly Gaza tent camp fire

WAFAA SHURAFA and SAMY MAGDY Associated Press — The Israeli military says an initial investigation into a strike that sparked a deadly weekend fire in a tent camp in the southern Gaza city of Rafah has found the blaze was caused by a secondary explosion. A military official, speaking on condition of anonymity pending a formal announcement, said Tuesday that the military fired two 17-kilogram (37-pound) munitions that targeted two senior Hamas militants.

One man injured in propane explosion at Centre Hall home

CENTRE HALL -- One man is in the hospital after a propane cylinder exploded inside a home. It happened around 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday at 411 Pennsylvania Avenue. Centre Hall Assistant Fire Chief Barry Fisher says they were called for a house explosion involving a propane cylinder. He says there was no fire and it actually burned itself out. Fisher warned that there's "significant structural damage" to the house. He's asking all neighbors to stay away and caution tape will continue to be placed around the home.

Superintendent quits in wake of school district sex scandal

PLUM, Pa. -- A western Pennsylvania school superintendent is resigning effective Oct. 1 in the wake of three male high school teachers who were convicted and sentenced to prison for having sex with three different female students. The Plum School Board on Tuesday voted to accept Timothy Glasspool's resignation. The same board also approved paying $300,000 to settle the district's share of a lawsuit filed by one of the victims.

'Babies in Bloom:' UPMC Altoona celebrates springtime newborns, Mother's Day

BLAIR COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — UPMC Magee Women's Hospital at UPMC Altoona is celebrating the birth of springtime newborns, including those born just in time for Mother's Day. According to a press release from UPMC, babies that are born this time of year receive special, customized onesies and "crocheted flower hats" made by volunteers. On Tuesday, UPMC Altoona welcomed the birth of baby Lavaydah. Her family, who is from Tyrone, now has another May birthday to celebrate, as mom Jaaden and older brother Weston both have birthdays later this month.

Inmate death at SCI Benner Twp ruled homicide

BELLEFONTE, Pa. (WJAC) — A homicide investigation is underway after an inmate was found unresponsive in his cell just before midnight Wednesday at State Correctional Institute Benner Township. Officials say 23-year-old Derric Harsh was taken to the hospital early Thursday morning, where he later pronounced dead at 1:08 a.m. After completing an autopsy, it was determined that Harsh died from manual strangulation and the manner of death was ruled homicide, according to the Centre County coroner’s office.

Local church creates 'porch pantry,' food available for people who are in need

FRIEDENS, Pa. (WJAC) — As people across the region are in need of food during this pandemic, organizations continue to offer new ways to feed people who are in need. Friedens Lutheran Church created a way for people to come and get food. Pastor John Barichivich wanted to find a way to help those in need of food in his town. He was hit with an idea when speaking with other pastors in the area.

One man dead after vehicle accident in Lancaster County

One man is dead after a vehicle accident in Brecknock Township, Lancaster County, Jan. 22 after his vehicle pulled out onto the roadway without proper clearance, state police said. According to a press release, Donald Swavely, 90, was exiting the parking lot of Good's Feed Mill on Dry Tavern Road around 12:15 p.m. State police said that another vehicle with a 28-year-old female driver and an infant passenger was traveling south on Dry Tavern Road when Swavely exited the parking lot without gaining proper clearance.
