States eye mileage fees as gas taxes sputter

(TND) — California is recruiting drivers for a pilot program intended to address its gas tax shortage. California calls its mileage fee program Road Charge. Oregon calls its program OReGO. States across the country are looking for ways to supplement revenue used to build and maintain public roadways. Oregon was the first state to implement a kind of mileage tax in 2015. Participants there pay 2 cents for each mile they drive, and they have GPS or non-GPS tracking methods.

Fiery crash on Route 22 in Cresson Township leaves one dead

2nd UPDATE |Cambria Co., PA (WJAC) — Authorities say Route 22 westbound in Cresson Township has reopened after being closed for nearly four hours following a fiery crash that left one person dead. Investigators say the victim was traveling westbound when the vehicle reportedly left the roadway and struck a road sign before colliding with an embankment. Police say the vehicle then crashed and overturned multiple times before it caught fire.

Johnstown church closes doors after nearly 150 years of service

Off-duty officer charged for shooting other man during altercation at DuBois business

Clearfield Co., PA (WJAC) — Authorities in Clearfield County say an off-duty police officer is behind bars after he shot another man during an altercation with the owner of a DuBois business over the weekend. Police say officers were dispatched to "Invictus," located along DuBois Street, early Sunday morning for a report of a shooting. "Invictus" is described as a multi-recreational establishment that offers axe-throwing and virtual reality gaming, among other activities.

PA lawmaker proposes ending Sunday hunting ban

One Pennsylvania lawmaker has proposed new legislation that would end the Sunday hunting ban in the state. According to a memo sponsored by Rep. Mandy Steele (D-Allegheny County), the legislation would repeal the state's prohibition on Sunday hunting and would give the Game Commission the authority to "decide when and how Sunday hunting is permitted." Woman deemed competent after series of run-ins with police at restaurants

LEESBURG, Fla. (TND) — A woman described as having “bright red hair” went into a Burger King after police say she was “issued trespass warnings from numerous establishments throughout the day.” That day was March 17, 2023, and the woman would leave the fast-food restaurant in Florida under arrest for disorderly conduct. “I knew this female to be Ms. Athena Fouser based on extensive personal knowledge/experience,” a police officer wrote in the arrest report.

'An immense loss:' Bellefonte school district mourns lacrosse player who drowned

CENTRE COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — The Bellefonte Area school district is mourning the loss of one of their own after a tragic drowning accident over the weekend at Raystown Lake in Huntingdon County. Officials say 16-year-old Nathan Dan passed away Saturday after drowning while swimming at the lake. School officials say the return to the classroom was rough for everyone. The athletic director confirmed that Dan was a lacrosse player and that the team plans to honor him by wearing a sticker on their helmets with his number 15 on it.
